D12 Bike Bus
Who are we?
We are a group of parents, whose children attend Riverview Educate Together National School. We would like our children to be able to cycle to school but it doesn't feel as safe when we cycle as separate units. We saw the Galway Cycle Bus video and were inspired to start our own cycle bus! We have one main route to the school at the moment and other smaller routes feed into it, from other directions. We also want to help other groups of parents work to set up routes to their schools.

Why do we want to cycle?
Each journey we make by Bike Bus avoids the use of cars and reduces carbon emissions. Most of the parents are able to cycle onwards to work, so this further reduces car journeys and related emissions.
Our children (and the accompanying adults) benefit from cardio exercise and arrive at school stimulated and ready to learn. And lest you aren't aware, cycling is fun! These days, children are more and more indoors, driven from activity to activity. We want them to have an active life, starting with cycling.

Dublin Cycling Campaign have supported us with awareness-raising and our first volunteer cycling marshal came from their ranks of very passionate cyclists.

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) have provided advice on how we can make best use of existing infrastructure along the route. The D12 Bike Bus plans to continue working with SDCC and DCC to push for improvements across Dublin 12.

Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club ran a Sprocket Rocket course at the school in the Spring 2020. Even if children aren't participating in the Bike Bus, they can do the course so that as many children as possible experience cycling in a positive and fun way.
